About the service

What is a periodontal cleaning?

A periodontal cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, is the first step in gum disease treatment. At Bevan Dental, we treat gum disease in Napa by cleaning below the gumline, where tartar and bacteria cause infection, then smoothing the root surfaces so your gums can heal and reattach.

Signs of gum disease

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Red, puffy, or receding gums
  • Bad breath that won't go away
  • Teeth that feel loose or have shifted

At your exam, we measure the pockets around your teeth and review your X-rays, with help from Overjet AI, to see if gum disease is present.

What to expect

We numb the areas we're treating so you stay comfortable, and we often treat one side of your mouth at a time. Your gums may feel a little tender for a few days afterward.

Perio Protect and home care

Perio Protect uses custom trays that hold a gentle medication against your gums at home, reaching bacteria below the gumline between visits. We'll also show you simple home-care habits that make a real difference.

After treatment

Once your gums have healed, most patients move to periodontal maintenance visits, which are a bit more frequent than regular cleanings. It's the best way to keep gum disease under control for good.

“I'd rather tell you the truth than talk you into something. If you're nervous, we slow down and keep things gentle. If something can wait, I'll tell you it can wait. After more than 25 years, I've learned that being honest and gentle is its own kind of warmth.”

Periodontal cleaning FAQs
What is a periodontal cleaning?

It's a treatment for gum disease, also called scaling and root planing. We clean below the gumline to remove the tartar and bacteria that cause infection, then smooth the root surfaces so your gums can heal and reattach.

How do I know if I need a periodontal cleaning?

Common signs include bleeding gums, puffy or receding gums, bad breath that won't go away, and teeth that feel loose. At your exam, we measure the pockets around your teeth and review your X-rays to see if gum disease is present.

Does a periodontal cleaning hurt?

We numb the areas we're treating, so you'll stay comfortable. Your gums may feel a little tender for a few days afterward. We often treat one side of the mouth at a time to keep things easy.

What is Perio Protect?

Perio Protect uses custom trays that hold a gentle medication against your gums at home. It helps reach bacteria below the gumline between visits and supports healing. We'll let you know if it's a good fit for you.

Can gum disease be reversed?

Early gum inflammation can often be reversed. More advanced gum disease can't be fully undone, but it can be stopped and kept under control with treatment and regular periodontal maintenance.

What happens after a periodontal cleaning?

Your gums need time to heal, and we'll check how they respond. Most patients then move to periodontal maintenance visits, which are a bit more frequent than regular cleanings, to keep gum disease from coming back.

Does insurance cover periodontal cleaning?

Most PPO plans cover part of gum disease treatment. We accept all major PPO plans, and CareCredit can help with any remaining balance.
