About the service

What is a dental bridge?

A bridge replaces a missing tooth by attaching a custom replacement tooth to crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap. At Bevan Dental, dental bridges in Napa are fixed in place, so there's nothing to take out.

Why replace a missing tooth?

  • Chew comfortably on both sides again
  • Keep nearby teeth from drifting into the gap
  • Protect your bite
  • Fill a visible gap in your smile

Bridge or implant?

Both work well. A bridge needs no surgery and is often quicker, and it's a great choice when the neighboring teeth already need crowns. A dental implant stands on its own without touching the teeth next to it. Our post Dental implants, bridges, or dentures: How to choose compares them side by side.

What to expect

  1. Preparing the supporting teeth. We numb the area and shape the teeth on either side.
  2. A digital scan. A quick iTero scan, with no goopy impressions.
  3. A temporary bridge. You'll wear it while your custom bridge is made.
  4. Your final bridge. We check the fit and bite, then cement it in place.

Caring for your bridge

Brush as normal and use a floss threader or water flosser to clean under the replacement tooth. Regular cleanings keep the supporting teeth healthy, which is the key to a bridge that lasts.

“I'd rather tell you the truth than talk you into something. If you're nervous, we slow down and keep things gentle. If something can wait, I'll tell you it can wait. After more than 25 years, I've learned that being honest and gentle is its own kind of warmth.”

Bridge FAQs
What is a dental bridge?

A bridge replaces a missing tooth by attaching a custom replacement tooth to crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap. It's fixed in place, so you don't take it out.

Bridge or implant: which is better?

Both work well. A bridge needs no surgery and is often quicker, and it's a great choice if the neighboring teeth already need crowns. A dental implant stands on its own without touching the neighboring teeth. Our post Dental implants, bridges, or dentures: How to choose compares them side by side.

Does getting a bridge hurt?

No. We numb the area fully while we prepare the supporting teeth. You may feel some tenderness for a few days, which usually settles on its own.

How do I clean under a bridge?

Brush as normal and use a floss threader, special floss, or a water flosser to clean under the replacement tooth. Your hygienist will show you the easiest way at your next cleaning.

How long does a bridge last?

With good care and regular checkups, a bridge can last many years. Keeping the supporting teeth healthy is the most important part.

Can a loose bridge be fixed?

Often, yes. If a bridge comes loose and the teeth underneath are healthy, we can usually clean it and cement it back in place. Call us as soon as you notice it so decay doesn't have a chance to start.

Can I get a second opinion on a bridge?

Yes. If you've been given a treatment plan and want another look, ask about our free second opinion. Dr. Bevan will look at your situation and walk you through your options, with no pressure.
