Dental implants, bridges, or dentures: How to choose

Replacing a missing tooth is about more than your smile. It helps you chew comfortably, speak clearly, and keep your other teeth from drifting out of place. The good news is that dental implants, bridges, and dentures all work well. The right choice depends on your mouth, your health, and your priorities.

Dental implants

A dental implant replaces the root of a tooth. A small post is placed in the jawbone, and once it has healed, it supports a custom crown on top.

Why patients choose implants:

  • They stand on their own, so neighboring teeth are not touched
  • They feel and function much like a natural tooth
  • They help maintain the jawbone where the tooth was lost
  • They are cleaned just like your other teeth

Things to consider: implants need enough healthy bone and take longer from start to finish than a bridge, because the implant needs time to heal. We use CBCT 3D imaging to plan each implant carefully. Our implant crowns are made by Unident, a lab known for implant crown design. Learn more on our dental implants and implant restorations pages.

Dental bridges

A bridge fills a gap by attaching a replacement tooth to crowns on the teeth on either side.

Why patients choose bridges:

  • No surgery is needed
  • Treatment is usually completed faster than an implant
  • They look natural and feel secure
  • They are a great option when the neighboring teeth already need crowns

Things to consider: the teeth on either side need to be shaped for crowns, and you will use a floss threader or water flosser to clean under the replacement tooth. See our dental bridges page for more.

Dentures

Dentures replace several teeth or a full arch. A partial denture fills gaps between your natural teeth, while a complete denture replaces all the teeth in an arch.

Why patients choose dentures:

  • They replace many teeth at once
  • They are the most budget-friendly option for multiple missing teeth
  • No surgery is required
  • They can be adjusted, repaired, or added to over time

Things to consider: dentures take some getting used to, and they are removed for cleaning. Learn more on our dental dentures page.

The in-between option: implant-supported dentures

If you like the idea of dentures but want them to feel more secure, implant-supported dentures combine both. A few implants anchor the denture so it snaps firmly in place. Many patients find they can eat and speak with much more confidence.

Questions that help you decide

  • How many teeth are missing, and where?
  • Are the neighboring teeth healthy, or do they need crowns anyway?
  • How important is it to avoid surgery?
  • Do you prefer something fixed or removable?
  • What fits your budget now and over the long term?
