About the service

When does a tooth need to come out?

Sometimes a tooth can't be saved. At Bevan Dental, tooth extractions in Napa are always a last resort, done gently when a tooth is badly broken, has decay too deep to repair, or is loose from advanced gum disease.

Before recommending an extraction, Dr. Bevan looks at ways to save the tooth, such as a root canal or a crown.

What to expect

  1. Imaging. X-rays or a CBCT scan show the tooth and the roots.
  2. Numbing. We numb the area fully so you feel pressure, not pain.
  3. A gentle removal. We work carefully and check in with you along the way.
  4. Clear aftercare. You leave with simple instructions for healing.

Healing and aftercare

  • Bite gently on gauze to control bleeding
  • Stick to soft foods at first
  • Avoid straws, smoking, and hard rinsing for the first few days
  • Call us if pain gets worse after a few days

Replacing the tooth

A gap can let nearby teeth drift and affect your bite. Options include a dental implant, a bridge, or a partial denture, and we'll help you choose what fits.

“I'd rather tell you the truth than talk you into something. If you're nervous, we slow down and keep things gentle. If something can wait, I'll tell you it can wait. After more than 25 years, I've learned that being honest and gentle is its own kind of warmth.”

Tooth extraction FAQs
When does a tooth need to be pulled?

A tooth may need to come out if it's badly broken, has decay too deep to repair, or is loose from advanced gum disease. Dr. Bevan always looks at ways to save a tooth first, such as a root canal or crown.

Does a tooth extraction hurt?

We numb the area fully, so you'll feel pressure but not pain. We go gently and check in with you along the way.

How should I care for the area afterward?

Bite gently on gauze to control bleeding, rest, and stick to soft foods at first. Avoid straws, smoking, and hard rinsing for the first few days so the area can heal. We'll give you clear instructions before you leave.

What is a dry socket?

A dry socket happens when the blood clot in the socket comes loose too early, which can cause a lot of pain a few days after the extraction. Following your aftercare instructions helps prevent it. If it happens, call us and we'll help.

Should I replace a pulled tooth?

Usually, yes. A gap can let nearby teeth drift and affect your bite. Options include a dental implant, a bridge, or a partial denture, and we'll help you choose.

Can I get a second opinion before having a tooth pulled?

Yes, and it's a smart step. Ask about our free second opinion. Dr. Bevan will tell you honestly whether the tooth can be saved.

Does insurance cover extractions?

Most PPO plans cover part of an extraction. We accept all major PPO plans, and CareCredit is available.
