A crown is an investment in a tooth, so it is natural to want to know how long it will last. The honest answer is that it depends. With good materials, careful work, and good habits, many crowns last well over a decade, and some last much longer.
What a dental crown does
A crown is a custom cap that covers a damaged or weakened tooth. It restores the tooth's shape and strength so you can chew comfortably again. Crowns are often used after a large filling, a crack, or a root canal.
What affects how long a crown lasts
A few things make the biggest difference:
- The material. Porcelain crowns look natural and are very durable. Gold crowns are extremely long-lasting and gentle on opposing teeth, which makes them a great choice for back teeth.
- The fit. A crown that seals tightly to the tooth keeps bacteria out. A poor edge is where new decay often starts.
- The lab. Crowns are handcrafted. We work with experienced dental labs, including Avondale Dental Laboratory, known for precise, natural-looking work.
- Your bite and habits. Grinding, clenching, and chewing ice or pens put heavy stress on crowns.
- Home care. The crown itself cannot decay, but the tooth underneath it can.
Why fit starts with the scan
We use an iTero digital scanner instead of goopy impression trays. The scan captures a detailed 3D model of your tooth, which helps the lab design a crown that fits precisely. It is also a lot more pleasant for you.
Signs your crown may need attention
- The crown feels loose or moves when you chew
- New sensitivity or pain around the crowned tooth
- A dark line or gap at the gumline
- A chip or crack in the porcelain
- Your bite suddenly feels different
A loose crown can often be recemented if you come in quickly. Waiting can let decay sneak under it, so it is best to call us as soon as you notice a change.
How to make your crown last longer
- Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth, especially along the edge of the crown
- Keep up with regular dental cleanings and exams
- Wear a night guard if you grind or clench
- Avoid chewing ice, hard candy, and non-food items
Our 2-year warranty on crowns
We stand behind our work. Our crowns come with a 2-year warranty, because we believe good dentistry should hold up.
Is a crown always necessary?
Not always. Dr. Bevan will only recommend a crown when a tooth truly needs one. If a smaller repair will do the job, he will tell you. If you have been told you need several crowns and want another opinion, ask about our free second opinion.
