Waking up with a sore jaw is a strange feeling. You slept all night, yet your jaw feels like it worked a double shift. In many cases, it did. Morning jaw pain is often a sign of what your mouth is doing while you sleep.
The most common cause: grinding and clenching
Many people grind or clench their teeth at night without knowing it. This habit is called bruxism. The jaw muscles are strong, and hours of pressure can leave them tired and sore by morning.
Signs that you may be grinding or clenching include:
- A sore or tight jaw when you wake up
- Dull headaches, especially around the temples
- Teeth that look flat, chipped, or worn
- Sensitive teeth without an obvious cause
- A partner who hears grinding at night
- Cracked fillings or crowns
Stress is a common trigger, but not the only one. Bite problems, sleep issues, caffeine, and some medications can play a role too.
When the jaw joint is involved
Your jaw connects to your skull at the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, just in front of each ear. When this joint or the muscles around it are strained, you may notice:
- Clicking or popping when you open your mouth
- Pain when chewing
- A jaw that feels stuck or hard to open fully
- Ear pain or fullness without an ear infection
Grinding and TMJ problems often go together. Constant clenching puts pressure on the joint, and an irritated joint can make the muscles tense up even more. Our TMJ treatment page explains how we evaluate your bite and jaw.
Could it be connected to your sleep?
For some people, nighttime grinding is linked to how they breathe during sleep. If you also snore loudly, wake up tired, or have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, mention it at your visit. A custom oral appliance can be a comfortable alternative to CPAP for some patients, and you can read more on our sleep apnea treatment page.
How a custom night guard helps
A night guard is a thin, custom-fit appliance you wear while you sleep. It does not stop the urge to clench, but it changes what happens when you do:
- It protects your teeth, fillings, and crowns from wear and cracks
- It spreads the pressure more evenly across your bite
- It can help tired jaw muscles relax
We make our night guards from a quick iTero digital scan, so there is no goopy impression tray. They are 3D printed right here in our office for a precise, comfortable fit.
What about store-bought guards?
Over-the-counter guards can seem like an easy fix, but they are bulky and not shaped to your bite. Some people find they clench even harder on a soft, poorly fitting guard. A custom guard is thinner, stays in place, and is designed around how your teeth actually meet.
Simple habits that can ease jaw pain
- Notice daytime clenching and let your teeth rest apart
- Avoid chewing gum and very chewy foods while your jaw is sore
- Cut back on caffeine later in the day
- Use a warm compress on tight jaw muscles
