When should you get a second opinion from a dentist?

Exterior of Bevan Dental in Napa, CA, offering free second opinions from Dr. Kenneth J. Bevan

You would not think twice about getting a second opinion before major surgery. Dental care deserves the same thinking. If you have been handed a long treatment plan, a big estimate, or a diagnosis that caught you off guard, it is completely reasonable to want another set of eyes on it.

A second opinion is not an insult

Many patients feel awkward asking for a second opinion, as if they are doubting their dentist. You are not. Good dentists expect patients to ask questions, and a confident plan holds up to a second look.

Dentistry also has more than one right answer. Two careful dentists can look at the same tooth and suggest different options, depending on how they weigh repair, timing, cost, and your goals. Hearing both helps you choose what fits you.

Signs it is worth getting a second opinion

  • The plan is large or expensive. Several crowns, implants, or a full smile makeover are big decisions.
  • The diagnosis surprised you. You were told you need extensive work, but nothing hurts and nothing felt wrong.
  • You were not given options. Most problems have more than one solution. If you only heard one, it is fair to ask what else is possible.
  • You felt rushed. Pressure to decide today is a reason to slow down.
  • The explanation did not make sense. You should understand what is wrong and why the treatment is needed.
  • Something just feels off. Your gut feeling counts.

Questions to ask about any treatment plan

Whether you are with your current dentist or getting a second opinion, these questions help you understand what you are agreeing to:

  • What exactly is the problem, and can you show me?
  • What happens if I wait?
  • What are my other options, including doing less?
  • Which parts are urgent, and which can be planned over time?
  • How long should this treatment last?

A clear answer to "what happens if I wait?" is especially useful. Some problems need attention now. Others can be watched safely.

How Dr. Bevan approaches a second opinion

Dr. Bevan would rather tell you the truth than talk you into treatment. If something can wait, he will tell you it can wait. If a smaller fix will do the job, he will say so.

When you come in for a second opinion, Dr. Bevan looks at your situation and tells you what he honestly sees. Sometimes he agrees with the original plan. Sometimes he suggests a more conservative option, such as treating an early cavity without drilling. Either way, you leave knowing more than when you walked in.

Our second opinion is free, and there is no pressure to move your care or start treatment with us.
